Living Wisdom Kindergarten in Beaverton, Oregon is for children ages 5 to 6 years old. We create an optimum learning environment through small class size and curriculum that includes yoga, movement, music, art, creative play, and a holistic introduction to traditional academic subjects. The comforting structure of daily routine is complimented by flexible, experiential curriculum, creating an inclusive educational experience. We provide a nurturing environment that fosters the children’s imagination, creativity, calm focus, discovery and love of learning.
Our Kindergarten curriculum is child-centered; we see the whole child and guide each one to develop their unique gifts. We also help them to develop the important “how to live” skills of compassion, curiosity, concentration and cooperation. Our classes are guided by the Education for Life philosophy and our experienced educators are trained to be aware of each individual child’s energy, as well as the rhythm of the group. By observing and responding to every child, teachers are able to guide them in their next step of growth, maturity, learning and development.
Early Literacy and Traditional Academics with Developmentally Appropriate Activities
Traditional academic subjects are introduced with an interdisciplinary and holistic approach. Early literacy and traditional academics such as math, science, reading, writing, geography and social studies are taught with developmentally appropriate materials and activities. Teachers look for the interest and abilities of each individual child to stimulate their excitement for learning. Our small school environment provides opportunities for students in intermediate grades to connect with, read with and mentor Kindergarten students. The children create friends across all ages from preschool through the upper grades and continue to develop these friendships throughout their years at Living Wisdom.
Class size is a maximum of ten students. Our teachers and family-like school
community create an environment filled with love. In this environment, students experience who they are and how to relate to the world around them.
A Typical Day in Kindergarten
A typical day begins with circle time that includes movement and song, yoga, sharing, inspiring stories, healing prayers and energy balancing modalities. Our curriculum is flexible and experiential. We make time in the day for children to enjoy imaginative and nature-based play and the arts.
At Living Wisdom, as guided by Education for Life, we recognize and cultivate four Tools of Maturity in each child: the physical body, the heart’s feeling, dynamic will power, and the intellect. A core principle of Education for Life is the understanding that children use these four tools within them to explore, learn, grow, and experience the world. The Kindergarten years are a bridge from physical to feeling. While the physical body is still their primary learning tool, they are also developing heart-qualities. Our experienced teachers engage students in numerous movement activities , often coordinated with words and music, which help to balance the children’s energy and develop body awareness. We help children cultivate their feeling nature by encouraging them to be inclusive and supportive of their fellow students. Children also participate in multiple annual performing arts presentations for their families or the school community. Through these activities, children learn how to use their bodies, hearts and minds in positive ways.
