Middle School

The Middle School Program at Living Wisdom School is located near the Portland, Oregon area. This holistic program is designed to help students negotiate the challenging passage from childhood into adolescence and prepare them for high school with their natural faith, joy, and self-confidence intact.

As with the Elementary School, our classroom is multi-aged (the Middle School includes 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) and kept to a maximum of twelve students.

Our balanced, integrative curriculum develops organically from our unique Education for Life philosophy and areas of study, teacher expertise, awareness of state and national standards, student interest and needs, unique opportunities, and spontaneous inspirations.

The students learn the core academic skills with their homeroom teamer:

  • Mathematics
  • Reading/Literature
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Social Studies
  • PE

Specialty Teachers provide instruction in the following areas:

  • Music
  • Dance
  • Art
  • Science
  • Foreign Language (French or Spanish).

They are also encouraged to identify their innate talents and develop them further through independent projects.Grace-solar-oven-science-300x312

Spiritual and character development, practical life skills, service learning, and stewardship of the earth are significant aspects of the Middle School Program. They are dynamically emphasized as a means to help children expansively and constructively express their burgeoning will power.

A Typical Day

A typical school day begins with some physically energizing activity, such as walking or running.

An opening circle follows which includes yoga postures and meditation so that each student begins the day of learning in a harmonious state of energized, calm, and centered awareness.

Usually, the first half of the day is spent in Homeroom; practicing academic skills and studying geography, history and literature.

After lunch, classes vary depending on the day but, typically, Science and Foreign Language classes are held twice per week, and Music and Dance classes are offered once per week. During Autumn and Spring, one day per week is spent off campus in service learning projects or experiential learning adventures in nature.
